Rebecca and Zoe Posted by Hello Katy at 8:51 PM 0 comments

Life's a Beach

My friend Shelly's mom has a great 2-bedroom trailer in a campground in North Truro (on Cape Cod), so last week we spent a couple of days there along with Shelly and her 2-year-old daughter, Sofia. Zoe and Sofia play together pretty well (including wrestling--and, occasionally, squabbling--like siblings), so they enjoyed having some extended time together. And both Zoe and Rebecca loved the beach. Zoe particularly liked the hermit crabs, while Rebecca was thrilled to eat handfuls of sand.

I'm not sure why I thought that a trip to the beach with the girls (and without Jim) would be a "vacation," as it wasn't exactly restful for me. Rebecca was up every 2 hours at night and, of course, she still needs to be carried most of the time. Thankfully, Shelly was very understanding and helpful, and she took the older girls to the beach in the mornings while Rebecca napped so that I could have a few moments of down time. And all of the girls were real troupers, so there weren't too many meltdowns. We'll definitely head back there for camping trips when the girls are a little older!

In other news, Rebecca has just started crawling, and while her current pace is slow, I expect to be chasing her within a week or two. And Zoe has been so oppositional for the past few days that Jim and I are ready to tear our hair out! Let's hope it's just a phase. Sigh.

A recent family portrait, by Zoe. I like how Rebecca is sticking out of my side, about to fall on her head. Zoe usually leaves her out entirely, so I figured that this was an improvement. ;) Posted by Hello

Welcome To The Family Blog

This is our latest attempt to keep family and friends up to date!

Why a "weblog" instead of e-mail or a webpage? First of all, it makes it much easier for us to share pictures with everyone. Because we still have a dial-up internet connection, we cannot e-mail digital pictures without tying up our phone for ages; and it's hard to get them to be the correct size and resolution for everyone to view. I tried keeping a webpage at various times, but that was no easier: not only did the pictures have to be resized and uploaded to our local server, but also placed into the right place on the website, which involved fighting with clunky software. Thus--the weblog is born. Once the blog is up and going, all I have to do is send an e-mail once in a while, and the page is updated. Photos can be e-mailed to the blog as well--and the software resizes them and changes them to the appropriate resolution before they are uploaded to the net, meaning that what used to take five minutes now takes a few seconds. And with this format, readers can leave comments or send us interesting links.

For non-family members, this blog is likely to be a bit of a bore, although I'm sure that Jim or I will include the occasional musing or rant. In any case, we'll give it a trial run and see what happens!
